When Liam was about 2 & a half, he became afraid of roosters. I have no idea where it came from. We didn’t visit a farm, or see any rooster movies. But he was scared of them, and almost every night for a week he would wake up afraid of a rooster coming into his room. Finally one night, I made a “no roosters allowed” poster, with a big cross out circle over a photo of a rooster. When Liam woke up, I showed him the poster and he was so relieved. When hanging it on the door, I was putting it up kind of high and he said “Momma, hang it low so the roosters can see it!” (of course - duh!)
There were no more rooster issues after that night, and it made me aware the power of signs. Since then, I use signs in my parenting here and there. I even post an occasional “kitchen closed” when I need to get dinner ready and they won’t give me a moments peace. And recently I’ve added a “flush the toilet”. Enough said.
